After months of anticipation, Mafia: The Old Country has finally unveiled its official trailer during the 2024 edition of The Game Awards. This long-awaited reveal comes three months after Hangar 13 teased the title at Gamescom, and now fans have a clearer look at what’s to come. The game is scheduled for a Summer 2025 release, with availability on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Steam.
A New Look at Mafia’s World
The reveal trailer showcases stunning in-engine cinematics, giving players a glimpse into the game’s narrative. Titled “The Initiation,” the trailer introduces the new don, who declares, “This is a family, bound by blood.” The scene transitions into operatic melodies, paired with visuals of a young man wielding a switchblade, firing a gun, and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Set in Sicily during the early 1900s, the game promises a rich and immersive storyline in a beautifully recreated historical setting.
The Leak and Social Media Tease
Ahead of its official unveiling, a 15-second snippet of the trailer leaked online, sparking curiosity among fans. In response, 2K Games took to social media, stating, “There’s much more to the story… Omerta will be broken tonight at #TheGameAwards.” This cryptic message only heightened the excitement leading up to the full-length reveal.
A Legacy of Excellence
Mafia: The Old Country is being developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games, continuing the legacy of the Mafia series. Hangar 13 previously delivered hits like Mafia III and Mafia Definitive Edition. The studio’s latest project, TopSpin2k25, was well-received earlier this year. Despite setbacks, including the cancellation of a new IP codenamed “Volt” in 2021, Hangar 13 remains a powerhouse in storytelling and immersive game design.
What to Expect
Although gameplay footage was absent from the trailer, the cinematic visuals promise an intense and gripping experience. With themes of loyalty, betrayal, and family, Mafia: The Old Country is expected to secure an M rating from ESRB and PEGI due to its mature subject matter. Fans can look forward to more updates as the Summer 2025 launch approaches.
