WhatsApp, the widely used messaging platform owned by Meta, is preparing a significant update that will impact users with older iPhone models. While the app continues to introduce exciting features, it’s also gearing up to drop support for certain outdated devices.
WhatsApp Will No Longer Work on These iPhones
As reported by WABetaInfo, the latest beta update of WhatsApp for iPhone includes a notification alerting users about the upcoming changes. Beginning May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on devices running iOS versions prior to 15.1. Presently, the app supports iOS 12 and above, but this shift will leave several older models behind.
The notification reads:
“Update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp. WhatsApp will stop supporting this version of iOS after 5 May 2025. Please go to Settings > General and tap Software Update to get the latest iOS version.”
The following iPhone models will lose access to WhatsApp:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
Similarly, on the iPad side, the upcoming update will cease support for the first-generation iPad Air, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3, as the app currently requires iPadOS 12 or later.
Why Is WhatsApp Dropping Support?
App developers regularly discontinue support for older operating systems to focus on optimizing their apps for newer technologies and features. By limiting compatibility to updated OS versions, developers can enhance app performance, security, and functionality.
According to Apple, only 9% of iPhones are currently running an OS older than iOS 16. This means the vast majority of users won’t be affected by this change, but those with outdated devices will need to take action.
What Should Affected Users Do?
If you own one of the devices listed above, here’s what you can do:
- Update Your iOS: If your iPhone or iPad supports an upgrade to a newer iOS version, make sure to update it promptly. This ensures continued access to WhatsApp and its features.
- Consider a Device Upgrade: If your device cannot be updated to iOS 15.1 or later, it may be time to upgrade to a newer iPhone model to keep using WhatsApp and other essential apps.
WhatsApp’s Continued Growth
While this update might inconvenience some users, it reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing evolution as a platform. By focusing on modern devices, the app can continue delivering innovative features and improved performance for the majority of its user base.
If you’re among those affected, plan ahead to ensure uninterrupted access to WhatsApp in 2025.
