If Google Chrome is your everyday browser, now is a good time to check whether it is up to date.
Google has released a major security update for Chrome that addresses 370 vulnerabilities, including several critical and high-severity flaws. According to the official Chrome Releases announcement, the fixes cover multiple parts of the browser and underlying Chromium platform.
Security updates of this kind are particularly important because Chrome is used by billions of people across Windows, macOS and Linux. Its enormous user base also makes it an attractive target for cybercriminals looking for vulnerabilities they can exploit on a large scale.
If you have not restarted Chrome recently, the latest protection may not yet be active on your device.
What Has Been Fixed?
The latest Chrome update addresses hundreds of security vulnerabilities affecting different parts of the browser.
Among the problems patched are critical and high-severity memory-safety flaws, including use-after-free vulnerabilities, improper input validation and out-of-bounds memory access. Under certain conditions, bugs of this kind could allow attackers to crash the browser, bypass its security protections or execute malicious code.
Some vulnerabilities can potentially be exploited when a user visits a specially crafted or compromised website. The victim may not need to download a suspicious program or deliberately install anything for an attack attempt to begin.
Google has temporarily restricted access to some of the technical details. This is standard practice following an important security release, as it gives users and organisations time to install the update before attackers can study the vulnerabilities more closely.

Many people delay browser updates because Chrome usually continues to work without any obvious problems. However, a browser does not need to crash or display an error message to be vulnerable.
Modern browsers handle an enormous amount of sensitive information, including:

- Payment information
- Personal and work documents
A browser vulnerability could allow malicious code to run within an active session or expose information that should remain protected. The risk becomes even greater when users remain signed in to several important accounts at once.

How to Check Whether You Are Protected
Checking for the latest Chrome update takes less than a minute:
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Help.
- Click About Google Chrome.
- Wait while Chrome checks for an available update.
- If an update is installed, click Relaunch.

Do Not Ignore the Restart Prompt
One of the most common mistakes is postponing the browser restart.
Chrome can download updates silently in the background, but it cannot fully apply them until the browser closes and reopens. This means that an update may already be waiting on your device while you continue using an older, vulnerable version.
If Chrome has displayed a coloured Update button in the upper-right corner, you should save your work and restart the browser as soon as possible.
The same principle applies to operating-system updates. Security patches for Windows, macOS and Linux often protect components that interact directly with the browser. Leaving a browser or operating system running for weeks without restarting can prevent important fixes from taking effect.
Review Your Browser Extensions
Updating Chrome protects the browser itself, but extensions can introduce additional risks.
Browser extensions may have permission to read webpage content, manage downloads, access browsing history or modify information on websites. A compromised or poorly maintained extension could misuse those permissions.
Open chrome://extensions and review everything installed in your browser. Remove extensions you no longer use and investigate anything you do not recognise.
You should also avoid downloading extensions from unknown websites. Even when an extension appears legitimate, check its developer, reviews, requested permissions and update history before installing it.

Other Ways to Stay Safe Online
Keeping Chrome updated is one of the easiest security habits to adopt, but it should be part of a broader approach to online safety.
You should also:
- Enable two-factor authentication whenever it is available.
- Use unique passwords for important accounts.
- Avoid downloading files from unfamiliar websites.
- Be cautious with unexpected links in emails and messages.
- Remove browser extensions you no longer need.
- Keep your operating system and other applications updated.
- Back up important files regularly.
- Avoid entering sensitive information on unsecured public networks.

Should You Switch Browsers?
Not necessarily.
The discovery of security vulnerabilities does not automatically mean that Chrome is unsafe. All major browsers occasionally contain bugs, and frequent security releases demonstrate that researchers and developers are actively identifying and fixing them.
Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera and several other browsers are based on Chromium. Although their developers generally incorporate Chromium security fixes, the timing of individual updates may vary.
Firefox and Safari use different browser engines, but they also receive regular security patches. Regardless of which browser you choose, delaying updates can leave you exposed to vulnerabilities that have already been fixed.
Switching browsers is therefore less important than keeping your chosen browser updated, reviewing its privacy settings and limiting unnecessary extensions.

Security updates rarely introduce exciting new features, but they are among the most important software downloads you will install.
Web browsers have become gateways to banking, shopping, communication, work accounts and personal information. A serious browser vulnerability can therefore create consequences far beyond a single compromised webpage.
Chrome usually handles updates automatically, but users still need to restart the browser to activate them. If you have not closed Chrome recently, take a minute to open the About Google Chrome page, install any available update and relaunch the browser.
That small step could prevent a much larger security problem later.
