Apple is set to unveil its iPhone 16 series during the “It’s Glowtime” event on September 9, but Huawei has decided to steal some of the spotlight by announcing the world’s first tri-fold smartphone just a day later, on September 10. It seems that the former Chinese giant has strategically planned this move to divert some attention from the iPhone 16 towards its own product, a smart tactic considering that Apple has faced challenges in China before introducing a series of discounts on various products, including some iPhone 15 models.
Latest teaser poster of the Huawei tri-fold smartphone hints at a unique design with two opposing hinges, forming a literal ‘Z’ shape
The last time the tri-fold smartphone was spotted, a former Huawei executive was holding a device that featured three ultra-thin panels with a significant rear camera bump. While those leaked images gave us an idea of what form factor to expect, the teaser now reveals more elusive details. As shown in the image first posted on Weibo, the tri-fold smartphone features three displays, with two opposing hinges that allow the device to form a ‘Z’ shape.
Huawei has been highly secretive about this device, and most of the information we have comes from a wave of unconfirmed rumors. According to the latest update, the company is still working to reduce the cost of the prototype, indicating that it might be some time before the tri-fold smartphone enters mass production. It’s also possible that due to the smartphone’s unique and complex form factor, further iterations may be needed, meaning mass production might not start until next year.
The announcement could serve as an elaborate teaser or concept unveiling, similar to how TECNO introduced its Phantom Ultimate 2, another tri-fold concept that shares many of the same attributes as Huawei’s upcoming model. While we are currently unaware of the full specifications, we are keeping our fingers crossed for September 10, so make sure to stay tuned as we’ll have all the relevant information ready for you.
