A/B Updates Arriving?
As we approach the anticipated January launch of the Samsung Galaxy S25, rumors are circulating that the device will feature an overhaul in how it handles updates at a core level.
According to insider @chunvn8888 (via SamMobile), the Galaxy S25 series will likely support A/B or seamless updates. These updates include major Android version upgrades and essential security patches, simplifying the user experience.
A/B updates, also known as seamless updates, allow the upcoming software version (B) to download and install on a separate partition while the current software version (A) continues to run. Most of the update’s work happens in the background, meaning you can use your phone without interruptions.
Though a restart is needed to apply the update fully, it’s a much quicker process. A large portion of the installation is complete by the time the phone reboots, minimizing the time spent staring at a progress bar.
A/B updates have been an Android feature since 2016, so Samsung’s possible adoption of it in the Galaxy series has taken some time. If the reports are accurate, it’s a significant improvement.
The Galaxy S25 won’t be the first Samsung device to feature seamless updates, as this function also launched with the Samsung Galaxy A55 earlier this year. However, it would mark the first time this feature appears on a flagship model.
SamMobile points out that A/B support is a hardware-level feature, meaning it must be pre-built into the device. Either a phone has A/B capabilities for its lifetime, or it doesn’t.
If Samsung mirrors its 2024 release schedule in 2025, we can expect three Galaxy S25 models to debut in January. Leaks have already provided a glimpse into potential color options and internal specifications.
