Fans can vote in four social categories, including Song of the Summer, Best Group, VMAs Most Iconic Performance, and Best Trending Video.
MTV has announced the four social categories and their nominees for the 2024 Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The categories open for fan voting include Song of the Summer, presented by Hilton, Best Group, and two newly introduced categories: VMAs Most Iconic Performance and Best Trending Video.
Voting for these categories will take place on MTV’s Instagram Story.
The Best Trending Video category “celebrates the artist’s videos and/or songs that inspired fandoms to generate massive content related to the video and/or song.” Nominees include Beyoncé, Camila Cabello ft. Playboi Carti, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Megan Thee Stallion ft. Yuki Chiba, and Tinashe. Fans can start voting on September 2 at 11 a.m. ET, with voting closing on September 3 at 11 a.m. ET.
The Best Group category honors a “favorite group across all genres.” Nominees include NSYNC, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, NCT Dream, NewJeans, SEVENTEEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, and Twenty One Pilots. Voting begins on September 3 at 11 a.m. ET and closes on September 6 at 11 a.m. ET.
The Summer 2024 hit will be recognized with the Song of the Summer category, presented by Hilton. Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, and SZA are among the nominees. Fans can vote in this category starting September 6 at 11 a.m. ET until September 10 at 11 a.m. ET.
Lastly, the final category fans can vote on is the show’s most iconic performance from previous years. Performances include the memorable onstage kiss during Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and Missy Elliot’s mash-up of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood”; Beyoncé’s pregnancy reveal after performing “Love on Top”; and Swift’s first VMAs performance with “You Belong With Me.” Voting begins on September 10 at 11 a.m. ET and concludes on September 11 at 11 a.m. ET.
On Friday, MTV also announced a “Bonus Week” of voting across general categories, which now ends on September 6 at 6 p.m. ET. Voting for the coveted Video of the Year, presented by Burger King, and Best New Artist, presented by DraftKings, will remain active leading into the show.
The VMAs will return to New York and take place at Long Island’s UBS Arena on September 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Swift, for the second consecutive year, leads the nominations with 12. The singer-songwriter’s track “Fortnight” has garnered nine nominations, including Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Direction, and now Best Trending Video. Swift is also nominated for Artist of the Year and Best Pop.
Other top nominees include Post Malone (11 nominations), Eminem (8 nominations), Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter, and SZA (7 nominations each); Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, GloRilla, LISA, Olivia Rodrigo, and Teddy Swims (4 nominations each).
