Warner Bros unveiled a new trailer and poster for Beetlejuice, the eagerly anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s classic 1988 supernatural comedy Beetlejuice, which is set to hit theaters on September 6 following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
As you’ll recall, the original Beetlejuice centers on a recently deceased couple, Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis), who find themselves haunting their own home after dying in a car accident. When the obnoxious Deetz family moves in, the Maitlands seek help from a rambunctious and mischievous ghost named Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) to scare the new inhabitants away. Among the new residents is the teenage Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), a goth girl fascinated by the supernatural, who tries to help the Maitlands navigate their afterlife while also dealing with Beetlejuice’s chaotic attempts to drive her family out.
The sequel finds Lydia still haunted by Betelgeuse (or Beetlejuice, as it’s pronounced), as her life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic, accidentally opening the portal to the Afterlife. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, allowing the mischievous demon to return and unleash his unique brand of mayhem.
Reuniting Burton with original cast members Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Keaton, the sequel introduces new faces including Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, Arthur Conti, and Monica Bellucci, in addition to Ortega.
Wednesday’s Alfred Gough and Miles Millar penned the script from their story, conceived with Seth Grahame-Smith, based on characters created by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson. The film’s producers include Burton, Tommy Harper, Plan B, Marc Toberoff, and David Geffen.
Expected to be one of the year’s major hits, Beetlejuice is projected to surpass the nearly $75M worldwide gross of the original film. While we await its debut, watch the new trailer above and check out the poster below.
