The prices of AMD’s top-tier “Zen 5” CPUs, the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X, have seen significant reductions just days after their official launch.
AMD Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X “Zen 5” Desktop CPUs Experience Up to 10% Price Drops Shortly After Release
AMD’s Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” Desktop CPUs, known for their enhanced multi-threaded performance and efficiency, have started to see price reductions. Despite their promising specs, initial sales have been slower than anticipated, with some retailers reporting fewer than 100 units sold shortly after launch.
Earlier reports indicated that AMD’s Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” Desktop CPUs were experiencing price drops of up to 8% in European markets. These price cuts were mostly applied to the higher-end CPUs, while the more mainstream Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 models, which arguably need these discounts the most, have not seen similar reductions. The slow sales of these newly launched chips appear to be driving these price cuts, but there are also reports of limited stock, prompting AMD to work closely with its partners to replenish supplies.
In the U.S. market, Microcenter was the first to offer a bundle deal featuring AMD’s Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X. Although these deals have yet to extend to the higher-end Ryzen 9 models, U.S. retailers have begun implementing the first significant price reductions for the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X processors.
As of August 24, 2024, B&H Photo is selling the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X CPU for $623, which is 4% below its MSRP of $649, while the Ryzen 9 9900X is available for $449, a 10% reduction from its original MSRP of $499. These are substantial price drops so soon after launch. Other retailers have also reduced the price of the Ryzen 9 9900X to $493.43, but this is not as aggressive as B&H’s offer. However, once one retailer begins offering discounts, others tend to follow, and with similar trends seen across European retailers, further price reductions in the U.S. market are likely.
- Ryzen 9 9950X – $623 US (B&H Photo)
- Ryzen 9 9900X – $449 US (B&H Photo)
- Ryzen 9 9900X – $493 US (Amazon US)
- Ryzen 9 9900X – $493 US (Newegg US)
AMD recently published a blog post discussing the gaming performance of its Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” CPUs. According to AMD’s evaluation, the gaming performance of these chips is on par with Intel’s current-generation offerings.
This news has left some gamers disappointed, as earlier benchmarks suggested that the Zen 5 chips had a more than 10% performance lead over the competition. Reviewers observed similar or slightly improved gaming performance compared to the previous generation, but the advantage over competing products was not as pronounced. It appears that these price adjustments may be a response to this shift in perception, so we’ll need to wait and see how the market reacts.
AMD Ryzen 9000 CPU Prices (US):
CPU | MSRP | Current Lowest (8/24/24) |
---|---|---|
Ryzen 9 9950X | $649 US | $623 US (B&H) |
Ryzen 9 9900X | $499 US | $449 US (B&H) |
Ryzen 7 9700X | $359 US | $359 US (All) |
Ryzen 5 9600X | $279 US | $279 US (All) |
With these recent price adjustments, it’s clear that AMD is adapting to market feedback and competition. As the Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” CPUs continue to find their place in the market, it will be interesting to see how these price cuts impact overall sales and whether further reductions are on the horizon.
