BioWare’s long-awaited Dragon Age: The Veilguard is finally on the horizon, arriving just shy of its predecessor’s ten-year anniversary. Fans have been eagerly anticipating a new Dragon Age title since 2014, when Dragon Age: Inquisition left players on a cliffhanger that has yet to be resolved. Now, BioWare has officially announced that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will launch on October 31, just a few weeks before Inquisition’s 10-year mark on November 18. While it might not have been a full decade since the last installment, it certainly feels like it has been.
The announcement of the release date is accompanied by a brand-new trailer, highlighting the high stakes that the characters face following the events showcased in the opening hour of the game, which BioWare previewed back in June. The story picks up with new protagonist Rook and their team, who disrupt Solas’ ritual, unleashing the long-imprisoned elven gods from the Fade. Now, Rook and their allies must confront these deities and attempt to save the world. Solas, the former ally turned antagonist, continues to play a significant role, serving as a kind of “Johnny Silverhand”-like presence in Rook’s mind throughout much of the game. Will long-time fans finally get the chance to confront Solas? And for those who attempted to romance him, will they have the opportunity to rekindle that connection? These questions, among others, will be answered this October.
The trailer is packed with exciting moments, but one standout is the reveal that Morrigan, one of the most beloved companions from Dragon Age: Origins and a key character in Inquisition, will return in The Veilguard. This time, she sports a new look, donning attire reminiscent of her mother Flemeth’s iconic outfit from Dragon Age II onward. Given the pivotal events of Inquisition, Morrigan’s role in the upcoming story could be significant, depending on the choices players made in the previous game.
In a move that has become all too common in the gaming industry, BioWare is offering a collector’s edition for The Veilguard, dubbed “Rook’s Coffer,” which does not include the game itself. Priced at $150, this package features goodies like a light-up Lyrium Dagger and a deck of in-game themed cards. However, those eager to get their hands on the game will need to make a separate purchase.
It’s been a long road to the release of The Veilguard, marked by reports of development challenges, scrapped drafts, and significant turnover within BioWare. Despite these obstacles, it’s exciting to see the studio returning to its RPG roots after the disappointing reception of Anthem. With The Veilguard, BioWare is poised to deliver an experience that fans have been waiting nearly a decade to play.
