One of the most exciting announcements at Gamescom 2024’s Opening Night Live is the reveal of Mafia: The Old Country. Although rumors of a new Mafia game had been circulating for some time, there was no official confirmation until now. Today, 2K and Hangar 13 officially unveiled the new title, set for launch in 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
Further details about this upcoming game will be revealed in December 2024, which could include news about the official release date or even a gameplay showcase.
Mafia: The Old Country is set against the breathtaking backdrop of 1900s Sicily. In this game, you will uncover the origins of organized crime through a gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of Sicily. Survival will require players to navigate a dangerous and unforgiving era, with action brought to life through authentic realism and detailed storytelling.
This game takes the Mafia franchise to an entirely new part of the world, as previous Mafia games were set in various periods throughout America.
“Across the first three entries in the Mafia franchise, we introduced players to the world of the Mafia through brutal stories set in different eras. In Mafia: The Old Country, we’re going back to the roots of what fans love about the franchise, crafting a deep, linear narrative with that classic mob movie feeling, visiting a stunning new setting, and delivering it all in a tight, focused package perfect for fans of immersive experiences,” said Nick Baynes, President of Hangar 13.
The Mafia franchise was first established with the landmark game released in 2002. Since then, the franchise has soared in popularity, selling more than 34 million copies across consoles and PC. The games have received high praise from both critics and fans, particularly for their rich narrative development, standout performances by actors, and meticulous attention to period-appropriate detail.
If this game has piqued your interest and you want to explore the Mafia franchise, now is the perfect time. All released games in the Mafia franchise are available on Steam until September 2.
So far, Gamescom 2024 is shaping up to be a major event for 2K. On the first big day of the Gamescom convention in Germany, they announced Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4, as well as provided a release date for Civilization 7.
