Netflix has just released the trailer for its highly anticipated “Squid Game” multiplayer video game, titled “Squid Game: Unleashed,” during the Gamescom video game convention.
According to Netflix’s official description, players can expect “fast, heart-pounding action and brutal competition” in this multiplayer battle royale game. The game will allow players to connect with friends or compete against others online, testing their ability to outlast and outsmart opponents in each twisted challenge. Familiar deadly games from the “Squid Game” series will be featured, alongside new games inspired by classic childhood activities, taking players on a dark journey through nostalgia. The question is, can you survive this dangerous playtime?
The video game is set to launch alongside the release of “Squid Game” Season 2, debuting on December 26 on Netflix. However, the exact release date for the game itself has not been confirmed yet. “Squid Game: Unleashed” will be available through the Netflix app, accessible via the iPhone App Store and Google Play Store.
In addition to “Squid Game: Unleashed,” Netflix also announced a new game, “Monument Valley 3,” during Gamescom. This game, launching exclusively on Netflix on December 10, is the first new title in the beloved franchise to be released in over a decade. Players will be able to “set sail in the beautiful universe that captured the imagination of millions and set a new standard for artistic and innovative mobile gaming.”
Netflix first teased the “Squid Game” video game back in December, simply describing it as a title that will allow players to “compete with others in games from the hit series.”
In recent years, Netflix has been rapidly expanding its gaming division, with over 100 games released to date. This includes titles like the internally developed “Oxenfree II: Lost Signals,” which critics hailed as one of the best games of 2023, “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy,” and games based on popular Netflix properties such as “Emily in Paris,” “Too Hot to Handle,” “Virgin River,” and “Money Heist.” Netflix currently has more than 80 games in development, including a mobile game based on “Selling Sunset.”
As part of its ongoing growth in gaming, Netflix recently brought on board Alain Tascan from Epic Games as its new head of games. The company has also begun testing games on TV and computers in several countries, as part of a long-term strategy to make its games available across all devices. During Netflix’s Q2 earnings call in July, executives committed to launching one new video game each month moving forward.
