When available on October 17th, the stand can charge a pair of Joy-Con controllers or Nintendo’s retro wireless NES gamepads.
Nintendo has officially announced the release of its standalone charger for the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers, scheduled to arrive on October 17th. This accessory is one that Switch gamers have long anticipated, dating back to the console’s launch seven years ago. Although third-party solutions have been available, Nintendo’s new charger offers some added flexibility.
Unlike most wireless controllers that can be charged with a USB-C cable, the Nintendo Joy-Con and the company’s retro wireless NES and Famicom gamepads typically charge only when attached to the Switch console. A separate charger simplifies the process of keeping more than two Joy-Con controllers powered up. It’s a curious timing for the company to introduce this accessory now, as the original Switch’s lifecycle is nearing its end, with a successor expected to be announced early next year.
Nintendo’s Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way) can charge two controllers simultaneously, drawing power from the Switch dock’s USB-C port or another power adapter. Additionally, the charger’s vertical support can be removed, enhancing its portability.
While pricing details for the accessory remain undisclosed, Techloot has reached out to Nintendo to confirm its availability in North America. So far, it has only been announced in Europe and Japan.
This new accessory will likely be part of Nintendo’s final major holiday push for the aging console. It joins the “Hyrule Edition” Nintendo Switch Lite and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, both of which release on September 26th, alongside new Mario & Luigi and Mario Party titles.
