Google has officially announced that its upcoming I/O developer conference will commence exactly two months from today, on May 14th. Similar to last year, the I/O 2024 keynote will be “presented in front of a limited live audience” and will be accessible virtually for all.
This year’s I/O is expected to place a significant emphasis on artificial intelligence, particularly following the recent launch of Google’s new flagship AI model, Gemini, and its derivative, Gemma.
The image generation feature of the Gemini bot sparked controversy, prompting Google CEO Sundar Pichai to denounce it as “wholly unacceptable” due to unintended consequences in depicting diversity. Additionally, considering the missteps during Google’s Bard launch last year, the company, while boasting considerable advancements in AI, will need to articulate why its technology stands out amidst competition from the likes of Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and others.
Attendees can also anticipate insights into the forthcoming features of Android 15 and enhancements across Google’s suite of services such as Gmail, Google Photos, and more. Furthermore, speculation arises about the potential debut of the Pixel 8A smartphone at I/O; given Google’s introduction of the midrange 7A during last year’s event, it’s plausible that its successor is on the horizon, potentially inheriting some of the AI capabilities of the Pixel 8 at a more accessible price point.
