Apple is reportedly developing a new Magic Keyboard specifically designed for its entry-level iPad models, aiming to enhance the device’s functionality and position it as a viable laptop replacement. The company’s “What’s a Computer?” campaign stirred discussions in the past, but the iPad has yet to fully live up to the laptop replacement claim. To back up its marketing, Apple appears to be making the necessary hardware adjustments.
A Dedicated Magic Keyboard for the Entry-Level iPad and iPad Air
Apple previously introduced a revamped Magic Keyboard for its OLED iPad Pro models, which was well-received. However, it’s now reported that a similar version will be developed for the entry-level iPad and iPad Air, potentially in multiple sizes to cater to different users.
According to analyst Mark Gurman, who shared the news in his latest Power On newsletter, Apple’s suppliers are in the process of developing this new keyboard accessory. The anticipated launch is expected to coincide with the release of upgraded iPad Air models next year, likely around Apple’s Spring event.
The upcoming Magic Keyboard may lack the premium aluminum casing found on the higher-end models, but it could introduce a function row, a feature that would significantly enhance the entry-level iPad’s usability as a laptop alternative. The design might draw inspiration from the current M2 iPad Pro Magic Keyboard, offering a similar user experience.
Earlier this year, Apple launched the OLED iPad Pro at its Spring event, boasting advanced processing power and dual-tandem OLED displays. The Magic Keyboard designed for the M4 iPad Pro features an aluminum build, a function row, and a larger trackpad for improved control, among other enhancements. Despite these new releases, Apple continues to support the previous generation of the Magic Keyboard for those still using the mini-LED iPad Pro.
Looking ahead, Apple is expected to hold another event following the iPhone 16 launch, where it might announce the M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro models alongside a redesigned Mac mini. Additionally, there is speculation that the 24-inch iMac could also receive an upgrade to the M4 chip.
