Apple’s upcoming updates for the Apple Watch series promise exciting advancements, with potential features like satellite messaging for the Ultra model and 5G RedCap support on select devices.
Earlier this year, Apple introduced non-emergency satellite messaging for iPhones. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company could bring a similar capability to its next-generation Apple Watch Ultra, complementing it with the much-anticipated blood-pressure monitoring feature.
Satellite messaging has been a long-rumored addition to the Apple Watch Ultra, even before its launch. This feature would allow users to send text messages from their watch without requiring cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity, mirroring the functionality currently available on iPhones. This enhancement could make the Apple Watch Ultra an even more appealing option for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts.
In terms of hardware, Apple reportedly plans to replace Intel modems in the Apple Watch lineup with MediaTek components. While Apple is developing its own in-house modems, they won’t be utilized in the wearables yet. The new modems, included in “some models,” are expected to support RedCap, a 5G standard tailored for wearables and IoT devices. RedCap prioritizes reduced costs, extended battery life, and streamlined designs by limiting extra antennas and bandwidth.
The addition of satellite messaging might also attract Garmin inReach users who seek to simplify their gear. While the inReach still holds an edge with its extended battery life for long hikes, Apple’s integration with its satellite partner, Globalstar—of which it recently acquired a 20% stake—could offer a competitive alternative.
As for health features, the Apple Watch’s blood-pressure monitoring might debut as soon as 2025, though delays have occurred in the past. Similar to sleep apnea detection, the feature wouldn’t provide precise measurements but would alert users to possible hypertension, helping them seek medical advice proactively.
