Apple’s most recent acquisition of yet another AI startup offers a glimpse into the tech giant’s ambitions for artificial intelligence in 2024. The acquired company, DarwinAI, hails from Canada and specializes in visual quality inspection, developing methodologies to streamline AI systems, making them more compact and efficient.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has pledged to unveil further insights into the company’s AI developments in 2024. This recent acquisition, focusing on enhancing the efficiency of AI systems on smaller devices, reinforces speculation that Apple is gearing up to deploy AI models directly on-device.

The execution of AI algorithms on-device aligns seamlessly with Apple’s privacy-centric approach, ensuring user data remains on the device rather than being transmitted to cloud servers. This approach not only bolsters user privacy but also facilitates lower latency and the operation of AI tools without requiring internet connectivity.
While Siri already operates on-device within the iPhone ecosystem, Apple is now amplifying its efforts in this direction. Apple has been lagging behind in the development and launch of generative AI tools, which demand large language models (LLMs) and sophisticated systems capable of content generation.
Optimal performance for on-device AI operations calls for compact, pre-trained models. Achieving this may entail fine-tuning to reduce the size and complexity of AI models without compromising performance. Additionally, leveraging GPUs and specialized chips—such as Apple’s Neural Engine—can significantly accelerate AI computations.
DarwinAI’s focus on optimizing on-device execution appears to align with Apple’s objectives, evident from their recent acquisition. Following Apple’s acquisition of DarwinAI earlier this year, numerous employees from the startup have joined Apple’s AI division, as disclosed by sources familiar with the matter.
Dr. Alexander Wong, one of DarwinAI’s co-founders, assumed the role of Director of Machine Learning Research at Apple in January, hinting at the timing of the acquisition.
In its pursuit of technological advancement, Apple continues to integrate innovative technologies, research, and talent through strategic acquisitions. In 2023, Apple led the AI acquisition race, securing ownership of 32 AI startups, outpacing competitors like Google, Meta, and Microsoft.
As for Apple’s relative lag in the AI domain and its penchant for secrecy, each new acquisition or rumor serves as a focal point of attention, illuminating the company’s trajectory in the realm of artificial intelligence.
