The latest iOS 18 update promises to be a monumental leap for iPhone capabilities, incorporating advanced AI features that process data directly on devices rather than depending on cloud technology. This significant shift highlights Apple’s commitment to enhancing device autonomy and performance, impacting both old and new iPhone models.
According to tech journalist Mark Gurman in his recent Power On newsletter, Apple’s upcoming software iteration will feature native on-device AI processing. This strategic move ensures that privacy and speed are prioritized, allowing for real-time AI computations without external dependencies. Apple plans to reveal this update during the WWDC 2024 event scheduled for June 10, where other significant announcements about watchOS 11, macOS 15, and more will also take place.
This advancement means that even older iPhones compatible with iOS 18 will gain from these AI capabilities without necessitating new hardware. Yet, the forthcoming iPhone 16 is rumored to be equipped with an enhanced Neural Engine, optimizing it for the more intensive AI operations expected with iOS 18. This sets the stage for developers to experiment and refine these functions from June until the iPhone 16’s release in September.
Interestingly, despite Apple’s maneuvers to acquire AI server technology, the current updates focus purely on leveraging the existing hardware capabilities of iPhones. This move aligns with reports from analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu, who suggest future strategic shifts might still incorporate server-based AI tools.
While the upcoming WWDC event will spotlight iOS 18 and its array of software enhancements, Apple has decided to hold back on introducing an AI-powered chatbot. However, the groundwork is being laid for a future where Apple could present a formidable challenge to rivals like ChatGPT and Google Gemini with its proprietary AI solutions.
Do you believe Apple will tailor its AI enhancements to specific iPhone models, enhancing functionality based on hardware capabilities?
