Apple has recently released iOS 18.1 beta 4 for developers, packed with significant upgrades, particularly in terms of camera functionality. While the ability to capture spatial photos was initially announced for the iPhone 16 lineup, this feature is now available for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max users. Last year, these models gained support for spatial video, but with the latest update, a new dedicated feature for capturing spatial photos has been added.
Spatial Photos Now Available with iOS 18.1 for iPhone Pro Models
Spatial photos and videos are advanced features that add more depth and realism to images and videos, representing a substantial upgrade to the camera’s capabilities. Although this feature debuted with the iPhone 16 series, the latest iOS 18.1 release brings it to iPhone 15 Pro models as well.
According to a report from 9to5Mac, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max users will notice a new Spatial section in the camera app, making it easier to switch modes and seamlessly integrate the new feature.
Best Practices for Capturing Spatial Photos
Apple suggests that users get the best results from spatial media by using landscape mode and ensuring stability while taking photos. Each spatial photo is expected to take up around 5MB of storage, while a one-minute spatial video could take up approximately 130MB. These immersive 3D media files can be viewed using the Apple Vision Pro headset.
In addition, the visionOS 2 update, which was also released this week, will allow users to convert any image from their library into a spatial photo. Currently, iOS 18.1 is in beta and available to developers, but the official release is expected in October, alongside the much-anticipated Apple Intelligence features.
iPhone 15 Pro Series Camera Receives Major Upgrades
With this update, the camera functionality of the iPhone 15 Pro series gets a significant boost, making it less likely that users will feel the need to upgrade to the iPhone 16 models. These enhancements could keep the iPhone 15 Pro series competitive for users who are passionate about advanced photography.
