Apple continues its push toward making eSIMs the norm, especially highlighting the security advantages they offer. In the U.S., this transition has been embraced, with iPhones dropping the physical SIM tray in favor of eSIM technology. However, with the release of the iPhone 16 lineup, it has been confirmed that models sold outside the United States still come with a physical SIM card tray.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus Retain Physical SIM Card Tray Outside the U.S.
At the recent iPhone 16 event, Apple unveiled multiple upgrades across its lineup, but one detail that stood out was that international models still come equipped with a physical SIM tray. While U.S. models have fully transitioned to eSIM, customers in countries such as the UK, France, Germany, and others will still find the nano-SIM slot in their iPhones.
Apple has been advocating for eSIMs for a few years now, with efforts starting in the U.S. around the iPhone 14 series launch. The goal is to eliminate the need for physical SIM cards, offering enhanced security by preventing the SIM from being removed in the event of theft. The removal of the physical tray also allows for a sleeker design and better water resistance, as there is one less entry point for water or dust.
Countries Outside the U.S. Still Use Physical SIM Cards, Alongside eSIM
While the SIM tray remains a feature in non-U.S. markets, many of these countries also support eSIMs. Apple’s support document lists carriers worldwide that provide eSIM-compatible plans, allowing users to take advantage of dual SIM functionality.
The physical SIM tray provides flexibility for users, especially in regions where eSIM adoption is slower. However, Apple continues its global push toward eSIM-only models, though a full transition may take some time.
