As Apple gears up for its next big event on September 9th, anticipation is building around the iPhone 16 lineup. With the event fast approaching, many rumors and expectations have emerged, especially regarding the new smartphone series. One of the major anticipated upgrades is the significant increase in base storage for the smaller iPhone 16 Pro model.
Apple Boosts Base Storage for the Smaller Pro Model to 256GB
Traditionally, Apple has differentiated between the Pro and Pro Max models with distinct offerings. However, this year, Apple is shifting direction by phasing out the 128GB storage option for the lower-tier Pro model.
According to a report from Trendforce, Apple will increase the base storage for both iPhone 16 Pro models to 256GB, eliminating any storage gap between the Pro and Pro Max variants. This decision is likely influenced by the inclusion of the high-end tetraprism periscope lens, which was previously reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
With the base storage moving up to 256GB, this change could justify a potential price hike. Trendforce predicts that even if the pricing remains the same, there’s a growing demand for higher storage options, driven by consumer habits that increasingly require larger storage capacities.
Storage Tiers and What This Means for Future iPhones
Looking back, Apple introduced the 128GB base storage option with the iPhone 12 Pro in 2020, which was an increase from the previous 64GB standard that persisted with models like the iPhone X. The entire iPhone 13 lineup followed this trend with 128GB as the base. Following this pattern, it’s possible that future iPhones may establish 256GB as the new standard for base storage across Pro models.
Pro Models to Feature Larger Displays
Alongside the storage increase, the iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to have the largest displays in iPhone history, allowing for more internal space for components. The iPhone 16 Pro will reportedly feature a 6.27-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will boast a 6.86-inch screen. More details about the iPhone 16 series are expected at Apple’s event on Monday, so stay tuned for further updates.
