It’s been a few years since the last iPad Mini was released, with the iPad Mini (2021) being the most recent model. An update is arguably overdue, and now there’s evidence to suggest that the iPad Mini 7 might be launching soon.
Respected leaker and journalist Mark Gurman reported on X (via Apple Insider) that many Apple stores are currently experiencing low stock of the iPad Mini (2021), and internally, the device is considered “constrained” within Apple.
This situation suggests that Apple might soon discontinue the iPad Mini (2021), which could mean the end of the iPad Mini line—at least temporarily—or the introduction of a new model.
Gurman believes this could indicate that a new model is on the way, and he wouldn’t be surprised if it comes with enhanced AI capabilities.
However, updating the iPad Mini to support Apple Intelligence (Apple’s approach to AI) would require a significant upgrade to the chipset. Apple Intelligence currently operates only with the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro chipset and the M-series chipsets in Apple’s tablets and laptops, while the iPad Mini (2021) is powered by the older A15 Bionic chipset.
If Gurman’s predictions are accurate, the iPad Mini 7 could be much more powerful than the current model.
A New Chipset, But Little Else?
This aligns with earlier leaks, which suggested that the iPad Mini 7 might feature a new chipset but would otherwise remain quite similar to the current model. So, if it does launch, don’t expect too many changes beyond the chipset upgrade.
If the low stock levels are indeed a sign of the iPad Mini 7’s imminent arrival, there’s a chance it could be revealed at Apple’s September 9 event, where the iPhone 16 lineup is expected to be unveiled. If not, it might be introduced later in the year, either at a separate event or through a press release.
On the other hand, it’s also possible that Apple is simply letting stock run low before replenishing it, without any plans to discontinue the iPad Mini line.
