For the last few years, rumors have circulated that Apple was planning to introduce solid-state buttons on its iPhone models. Despite these reports, Apple has since released two generations of iPhones without these changes. Now, however, it’s being suggested that Apple may merge the Action Button with the Volume Button on the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models.
iPhone 17 Pro Could Feature a Single Button by Merging the Action and Volume Buttons
Apple was previously expected to implement solid-state buttons with an extended Volume Button for both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series. For those unfamiliar, the iPhone was rumored to feature a single elongated volume button that would replace mechanical functionality with a Taptic Engine for haptic feedback—much like the Camera Control button Apple has introduced in recent models.
According to insider Majin Bu, a change is expected to be implemented in the iPhone 17 Pro model, with Apple likely consolidating the Volume Button and Action Button. The company has been consistently introducing new button functionalities over the past couple of years, including last year’s Action Button and this year’s Camera Control button. The potential merging of buttons on next year’s model could reduce distractions and enhance usability.
The Future of Apple’s Button Design
While it remains to be seen how Apple plans to execute this feature, recent trends suggest the company could use capacitive touch technology similar to that of the Camera Control button. For example, the Camera Control button functions as a regular button but includes capacitive capabilities, allowing users to swipe up or down for various tasks.
If Apple decides to merge the Action and Volume Buttons, it may adopt similar technology. A regular press could initiate the Action Button’s functions, while swipes and taps would adjust the device’s volume. Although these are only speculations based on the company’s past innovations, it’s plausible that this change will be introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro models.
Apple is also rumored to be launching the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to be more expensive than the Pro models, likely due to its experimental features. While the merging of buttons is specifically reported for the iPhone 17 Pro, it could potentially make its way to the standard iPhone 17 models as well.
