OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, experienced a two-hour outage early on Tuesday. The issue has been resolved, and the system is now operational.
The outage began at 11.20AM PT and lasted until 1.55PM PT, affecting users worldwide, including those in India from 11.50PM on Monday night to 2.25AM on Tuesday morning. This marks the second outage for ChatGPT this month, with a previous incident occurring on June 4.
Reports indicate that ChatGPT went offline around 11.50PM on Monday. OpenAI commenced their investigation approximately thirty minutes later, restoring service by 2.25AM. During the downtime, users faced either no response or an error message when attempting to use ChatGPT, impacting many globally.
OpenAI explained to Tom Guide that the outage resulted from an “unexpected surge in traffic and demand, leading to system overloads.” The company noted that the disruption mainly affected ChatGPT’s web and mobile applications, causing various error messages and access issues across different platforms. Initially, OpenAI’s status page attributed the issue to internal server errors and high demand. While services have returned to normal, the specific cause of the traffic spike remains unspecified.
