In anticipation of the upcoming national elections in India, X, under Elon Musk’s leadership, has initiated the deployment of its Community Notes feature, a user-driven fact verification tool, across this pivotal market. Starting today, a select group of Indian participants will begin to share their insights, with plans to gradually include more voices in the program. These contributors play a critical role in enriching popular discussions with factual depth or dispelling prevalent misconceptions, with their inputs subject to community evaluation for usefulness and accuracy.

Previously, in December 2022, X had extended the visibility of Community Notes on a global scale, although the privilege of contributing was limited to select regions. The platform has progressively opened up this feature to a wider international audience, aiming to enhance localized understanding, bringing the tally of participating countries to 69.
Furthermore, X expanded Community Notes to encompass visual content last year, enhancing scrutiny over images and videos. Despite its widespread adoption, the feature hadn’t been introduced in India until now, a move that coincides with heightened vigilance against election misinformation on digital platforms. While X has not announced any India-specific initiatives for the election season, the introduction of Community Notes could play a pivotal role.
The efficacy of Community Notes in mitigating misinformation on X has been mixed, and the feature is poised for a stringent test within India’s diverse linguistic and political milieu. Additionally, X has recently revisited its stance on political advertising, reversing a ban instituted by previous management.
X’s journey in India has been fraught with challenges, including legal confrontations over content moderation mandates from the government. Earlier instances saw the platform withholding content related to socio-political movements upon official directives, with legal appeals against such orders still pending. Musk has acknowledged the tightrope walk in adhering to India’s stringent social media regulations, emphasizing compliance with local laws.
