As part of the launch of the new Pixel 9 series, Pixel Watch 3, and the new Nest Thermostat, Google is introducing a fresh approach to its packaging. This innovative packaging is 100% plastic-free, with a texture and design that encourages you to recycle it, and it even opens in a novel and fun way.
While packaging might not usually grab much attention, this is the first significant update from Google in a while for the boxes encasing its premium hardware. The new packaging for devices like the Pixel 9 Pro is particularly impressive, featuring a specially developed paper that is “three times stronger” and 70% more stretchable than what was used previously. That’s pretty remarkable, right?
The boxes have also been made lighter, which should help reduce their carbon footprint during global shipping. Despite the lighter design, they still offer robust protection thanks to a new “molded fiber pulp” made from recycled newspaper. Google hopes that the speckled design of the material will “look recyclable” enough to prompt users to recycle it.
Additionally, Google has introduced a new peelable closure that tears open from the back, making it easier to access your device. However, it’s still strong enough to keep everything securely inside until you’re ready to open it. A video below demonstrates how this new closure works and gives a closer look at the overall packaging design.
This new eco-friendly packaging will ship with the latest Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit devices.
