When Microsoft introduced the dedicated Copilot key on new Windows PCs, the company described it as the biggest change to the Windows keyboard in decades.
Not everyone agreed.
While some users welcomed quick access to Microsoft’s AI assistant, others questioned why the key could not be customised like many other buttons on a keyboard. Microsoft is now preparing an option that will allow users to remap the Copilot key so that it functions as either the Right Ctrl key or the Context Menu key.
For anyone who has accidentally launched Copilot one too many times, it could be a welcome change.
What Is the Copilot Key?
The Copilot key first appeared on new Windows PCs in 2024 as part of Microsoft’s push to make AI a central part of the Windows experience.
Instead of opening the traditional Start menu or another familiar shortcut, pressing the key launches Microsoft Copilot, the company’s AI assistant.
Depending on the device manufacturer and keyboard layout, the key may replace the traditional Right Ctrl key or the Context Menu key found on older keyboards.
Microsoft sees Copilot as a productivity tool that can help users summarise documents, answer questions, generate text and assist with everyday tasks directly from Windows.
The company has also introduced a new generation of Windows 11 devices designed around dedicated AI hardware and features.
Why Some Users Don’t Like It
The issue is not necessarily Copilot itself.
Many Windows users simply prefer deciding how their keyboard works.
Some people rarely use AI assistants, while others would rather assign the extra key to something they use every day, such as:
- Opening File Explorer
- Launching Task Manager
- Starting a favourite application
- Activating a macro
- Restoring a familiar keyboard function
Because the key had limited customisation options at launch, many users felt that Microsoft was forcing an AI feature into their workflow.
Similar concerns have surrounded other Microsoft AI features. The company previously changed the default behaviour of Windows Recall following criticism from security experts and users.
A More Flexible Approach
Microsoft has confirmed that a future Windows 11 update will add a setting allowing users to remap the Copilot key so that it acts as either the Right Ctrl key or the Context Menu key.
When the update becomes available, the option is expected to appear under:
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard
Some current versions of Windows 11 already include limited Copilot key customisation under Settings > Personalisation > Text input, allowing users to launch Search or certain supported applications.
The upcoming change will go further by restoring traditional keyboard functions that were replaced when the Copilot key was introduced.
Rather than treating the key as permanently tied to Copilot, Microsoft appears to recognise that not everyone uses a PC in the same way.
For power users especially, even a single programmable or restored key can become a valuable shortcut.
Why This Matters
On the surface, changing the behaviour of one keyboard key might not sound particularly exciting.
However, small usability improvements often have a bigger impact than flashy new features.
People interact with their keyboards thousands of times every day, so giving users more control can improve both productivity and overall satisfaction.
The change also reflects Microsoft’s continuing transition from the traditional Control Panel towards the modern Windows Settings app, where more system customisation options are gradually being added.
It is also a sign that Microsoft is responding to feedback from Windows users who have expressed concerns about how aggressively AI features have been integrated into the operating system.
AI Isn’t Going Anywhere
Even with this change, Microsoft is not backing away from Copilot.
In fact, quite the opposite is true.
Microsoft continues to invest heavily in AI across Windows, Microsoft 365, Edge and many of its other products. This expansion is part of a wider move towards dedicated artificial intelligence hardware and software experiences.
The ability to remap the Copilot key simply recognises that AI should ideally be available when users want it, rather than being forced into every workflow.
Giving people more choice may ultimately encourage wider adoption more effectively than mandatory shortcuts ever could.
When Could the Feature Arrive?
Microsoft says the new remapping option is expected to arrive through a Windows 11 update later in 2026.
The company regularly evaluates new Windows features through its Windows Insider Programme before making them broadly available.
The exact release date may vary depending on the device, keyboard implementation and update schedule. Microsoft also notes that configuration options can differ between manufacturers because some devices include their own keyboard-management software.
Once available, the feature should give Windows 11 users with compatible hardware a simpler way to restore the function previously assigned to that part of the keyboard.
Final Thoughts
The dedicated Copilot key was designed to highlight Microsoft’s AI ambitions, but not every user welcomed the change.
Allowing people to remap it as the Right Ctrl or Context Menu key is a relatively small update, yet one that could significantly improve the Windows experience for many users.
It restores a degree of choice without removing Copilot or preventing people who value the assistant from continuing to use it.
Sometimes, the best productivity feature is not adding something new—it is giving people the freedom to customise the tools they already have.
